It’s DADGAD up a whole step.
E B E A B E
The first detail on that bit is it’s a fretless resonator tri-cone guitar with a Seymour Duncan Firebird PU at the end of the fingerboard.
Needs fairly radical EQ to get any clarity.
I use a plain fourth string on that guitar, the middle E, which would probably be unplayable in terms of intonation on fretted guitar.
Anyway, the whole set-up is pretty distinctive/weird, and that might be what’s catching your ear, musical content aside for the moment.
You might want to listen to the Satellite City album version too. I doubled the part on a fretted Martin to give it a little more point and ease the suffering of the Firebird pickup EQ although I did also mic both.
If you like the Tiny Desk sound better than the mix with fretted and fretless, acoustic/electric, then a lot of the attraction to the sound is likely the fretless timbre and intonation. If you like the record better, you’ll do fine on any regular guitar.
I’m on the road right now, don’t have a fretless with me, but when I get a break I’ll post a video so you can see the fingering better. It’s an odd mix of fretted and open strings to deal with the plain 4th string, but if you’re more or less familiar with DADGAD you’ll puzzle it out soon enough. Anyway, good question! Thanks for listening and reaching out. Hope that helps! We’ll get back to this when I’m home : )

Yeah, there’s lots of that “cello” style lengthwise along the string technique, it sets me up to land on the occasional lingering melody tone flat to the fret if I need the pitch lower than the fret would give me if I used the normal rock/blues vibrato.

The regular vibrato only goes sharp, which is fine, there’s lots of application for a little lift in the pitch, but I do occasionally need to drop a note a little and the lengthwise vibrato will do both, so I’m “cello” maybe half the time.

Before anybody jumps my chit about the cello reference, the guitar version is reversed in terms of motion vs pitch.
When I’m moving toward the bridge on fretted guitar, that’s lowering the pitch. On fretless or slide, towards the bridge is sharp.
We just got this website working again after a long rebuilding process, so I’m not entirely sure if I can post a video yet, but if I can, that’d explain it better than I can type it.
Anyway, I’ll figure out how to demo the technique so you can see and hear it working, and that’ll clear it up.

Greetings Steve, After looking at other posts, I thought this is the proper venue to ask your level of interest to conduct a guitar clinic at our boutique, tropical “Grateful Hotel” to discuss gear, guitars, and tuning. We are also interested in having you play several shows either solo or accompanied by an artist per your approval. Nate LaPointe of Cubensis hosts a clinic every January. Take a glance at www.thegratefulhotel.com. We’re booking solid talent such as Mark Karan, JK, Rob Eaton, Garrett Deloian and many more from around the country. Most are repeat offenders they had such a good time. This is our fourth year in operation and we’re going strong. You can respond privately to: jpdriessenjr@gmail.com. We make the magical, mystical experience happen for patrons AND the musicians. The soonest we suggest booking is the high season w/ little rain - January thru April - that gives us time to fill the clinic and draw outside patrons. It’s an opportunity you’ll never regret!!

The Goldtop had a set of 1955 Les Paul Custom pickups in it for a while, I recently changed it back to the 68 minihums.
I’m sure I’ll change it again. .

I still use Pyramids on it, but “the tens” thing for me is almost always some hybrid set.
The Hendrix set is the old Fender 150 set, Duane Allman, John Cipollina, Cornell Dupree, everybody used those except Hendrix.
Dickey Betts used a .010 on top of a Gibson Sonomatic 12 set, so 10, 12, 16, 28w, 32 44.
I do the same with the Pyramid 12’s, put a 10 on top, throw out the low E.
10, 12, 16, 24w, 32, 42.
anyway, that’s the pre-Ernie Ball prepackaged slinky set strategy everybody used back in the day.
So, there’d be quite a bit of variation in gauges depending what brand “regular” strings you started with. That’s my normal approach too, sometimes one gauge up or down on any of the inside strings and tend toward the lighter third string.
Right now the LP has flatwound Pyramid 11’s on it, wound third, I should probably change that huh?

Same output stages.

Modified LXP1 for reverb and probably the RV2 for echo although I don’t remember how much I used that effect for Phil and Friends.
The LXP1 ran with a Dumbleator effects loop type thing. Bill Krinard built it.
Speakers were unidentifiable Celestion samples, Alnico, got ‘em from Boogie.
those were under the Dumble, and either a pair of the early paper cone Tone Tubbies, which were pretty much Vox/Celestion type speakers as well, or maybe Vox Blues.
probably TT. .
Mutron-3 and old Vox Tone Bender, that’s about the extent of my recollection.
I still own all that same stuff, and to your point about “hands”, if I set all that same gear up today and played it, it’d sound completely different.
i don’t sound like me with the same gear, and/or I sound exactly the same with whatever, or not. . Go figure.
